Have You Chose The Most Appropriate Wide Angle For Your DashCams?

How to test?

In the measured below, we will compare them from the definition, distortion control and license plate recognition which is the three main indicators. Respectively, we use 120°, 138°, 170 ° angle of view of DashCams to record in the same route. Their performances in turn as follows:

Clarity/Distortion Performance:

From the point of the effect of the above, definition of the 138 °angle is the highest. Compared with the wide angle of 120 ° and 170 °, the sharpness of 138 ° wide angle is much higher, but the shortage is also very obvious, which shows the relatively serious distortion on the edge of the image compared with the other two degrees.

From the effect of shooting, we can get “the greater angle, the wider shooting range, but the picture may be somewhat vague”. (It varies from type to type.)

The recognition of license plates:

120° wide angle：

138°wide angle:

170° wide angle：

138 °wide angle is more outstanding in license plate recognition, you can see the further license plate number. But the distortion of the picture is not too ideal, if the degree is greater, you will find a terrible shooting!

In fact, for the recognition of vehicle license plate, the higher sharpness, the better results! In the present tests, 120°wide angle can identify license plate number within the normal range. For the 138° wide angle of DashCam, itself sharpness is better than the other two. As for 170 ° wide angle of DashCam, it can clearly identify license plate number right in the middle of the cars, but due to large distortion cannot clearly identify the license plate numbers on the edge of the cars.

*The suggestion on how to choose an appropriate wide angle for your DashCam1、Private cars, the wide angle from 120°to 130°is enough.
2、Slightly larger cars can choose DashCam with 150°wide angle.
3、As coaches, choose 170°wide angle DashCam.

Notice

The wide angle is not the more the better! The broader perspective of DashCam which is greater than 160 °, may be false, and it’s distortion is larger, not only the picture looked vague, but also has difficulty in clearly obtaining evidence! So when choosing DashCams, don’t blindly pursue big wide angle, you must bebalanced consideration to its real effect.
